"Homestay" is the opportunity for Canadian family to accommodate international students to assist them in settling into the local way of living. Imagine, coming to a new country with different culture and different language. Often, students feel home sick and need the feeling of security, feeling at home which is allowed by living in a family. This is also their chance to experience our Canadian lifestyle.
For host families, new addition to the family means differently. Some hosts would like to spend time with others, some would like to meet new people. In some cases host family would like their children to benefit from cross-cultural experience.
Being a host for the student, brings the responsibility to ensure a safe and comfortable home for the student. The student should have the feeling welcome and well cared. Homestay student is different from guest in hotel. He/she should be invited to participate in family activities.
The host is expected to facilitate student to settle into the new surrounding. They may need to open bank account, help in taking public transportation, or finding their way to the post office and grocery stores. Homestay student needs access to telephone to maintain communication to his/her family as well as for study purposes.
